NameSilo vs Porkbun: Which Domain Registrar Should You Choose?

If you only need a few domains, want a clear price, and want to point a site quickly, choose Porkbun. If you hold many domains, are willing to prepay account funds, and need bulk tools, choose NameSilo. For a business-critical domain, look at security features before you chase a few dollars.

Look past the first-year price

A domain sits in front of your website, company email, payment callbacks, login system, and brand traffic. Anyone who can change DNS, request an auth code, or edit contacts can affect that domain.

When you pick a registrar, check four things: what you will pay every year after the first; whether DNS and forwarding are easy to use; how well the account is protected; and what happens if you miss a renewal.

Both companies include free WHOIS privacy, DNS, and email forwarding. NameSilo is stronger for large portfolios. Porkbun is stronger for buying a domain and getting a site online quickly.

Price: the real question is whether you can get that price

For a standard, non-premium .com, Porkbun’s public registration, renewal, and transfer prices are all US$11.08. NameSilo’s regular public price is US$17.29. After you join the Discount Program, even a 0–99 domain account can see US$11.05.

NameSilo’s discount plan requires payment from Account Funds, so you have to add money first. The minimum deposit is US$50. Coupon codes cannot be combined with the Discount Program.

NameSilo’s discount price and Porkbun’s public price are almost the same. Over five years the gap is US$0.15. If you only have a few domains and do not want to prepay a balance, Porkbun is simpler. NameSilo’s tiered discounts and bulk tools start to matter when you hold many domains.

If you are buying .app, .io, .co, .org, or similar TLDs, check the renewal price. A cheap first year does not mean a cheap second year.

How to use NameSilo coupon codes

VIP16888 and VIP123 work only at NameSilo. Porkbun has no matching codes and does not ask you to join a Discount Program first. At NameSilo checkout, try VIP16888 as a new user or VIP123 as a returning user.

Whether a code works, how much it takes off, and which domains it covers is decided on the checkout page. NameSilo’s official coupon page did not list a publicly advertised active coupon when we checked. It also notes that most promotions exclude premium domains, and a first-year deal does not lock in a cheaper renewal. Compare the coupon total with the Discount Program price and take the lower one.

Features: Porkbun is easier day to day; NameSilo is better at scale

DNS is the settings that point a domain at a website and mailbox. You will use it to connect Vercel, Shopify, Google Workspace, or almost any other service.

Porkbun’s DNS is powered by Cloudflare. It documents more record types, plus an API, bulk edits, and Quick DNS Config. Common site and email setups are easier for first-time users.

NameSilo covers typical website and email DNS and supports DNS templates: one set of records can be reused across many domains. That saves time if you manage dozens or hundreds of names.

Porkbun DNS using Cloudflare does not give you Cloudflare CDN, WAF, or other paid features. It only means Cloudflare runs the DNS service.

Security: a password is not enough for an important domain

Both registrars support authenticator-app 2FA: you enter a code from your phone in addition to the password. Treat that as the minimum.

Porkbun’s edge is hardware security keys such as YubiKey. A hardware key is harder to phish: stealing the password is usually not enough to finish login.

NameSilo’s edge is Domain Defender. Changing DNS, unlocking a domain, editing contacts, or requesting an auth code can require extra confirmation and trigger alerts. That is useful when you hold many domains.

Whichever you pick, do this first: turn on 2FA; enable auto-renew on important domains; store recovery codes; do not use a throwaway mailbox as the registrant email; and do not put the domain, DNS, and payment on the same temporary account.

What happens after expiry? Do not wait until the last day

When a domain expires, the website, email, and verification services can all break. The two registrars handle that window differently.

NameSilo says you still have time to renew or transfer after expiry, but parking DNS may replace your records from day 1. Days 31–40 may move the name into auction, and it can be removed from your account.

Porkbun says many common domains usually keep working for the first 10 days after expiry. After that they may be parked, taken offline, or sent to auction. Around day 21 the name may be submitted to auction; once someone bids, you may no longer be able to renew.

Auto-renew is not a substitute for a reminder, and one reminder is not enough. For an important domain, keep auto-renew, a calendar alert, and a backup payment method.

How to choose

If you only want a few domains and need to attach a site, mailbox, or redirect, choose Porkbun. The .com price is clear, you do not prepay a balance, and the DNS plus hardware-key support fit individual developers and small teams.

If you hold many domains, will fund an account balance, and want bulk DNS, renewals, and account permissions, choose NameSilo. The Discount Program, bulk tools, and Domain Defender are built for a long-term portfolio.

Either way: do not shop on the first-year price alone. Check the renewal price, the security options, and the expiry rules. Once a domain is in production, saving a few dollars matters less than avoiding one incident.
